Protein drinks part two: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough?

Continuing on my quest for a decent-tasting, easy-to-use protein drink mix, today I tried Spiru-Tein High Protein Energy Meal in the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor.

I had high hopes going into this one, because the package clearly says “Great Taste” and “Mixes Instantly”. That sounds like it meets my ideal standards! I mixed the powder with 8 oz. of milk (22 grams of protein, by the way, in 210 calories) because skim milk was the first item on their list of things you can mix it with.

I’m not sure what their definition of “mixes instantly” is (and it even says on the back of the package: “Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Spiru-Tein mixes instantly. No blender required.”), but I think I have a different definition. I stirred and stirred (and stirred) and finally resigned myself to drinking it with lumps in it.

Once I took a sip, I realized part of the reason I was having trouble mixing it: there are little pieces of “cookie dough” that are solid. The overall effect was kind of odd… I’m not used to having chewy/crunchy things in my beverages. But the taste was significantly better than the Strawberry Metabolic Reset drink I had yesterday. Not actually good, mind you, but it didn’t require an iron will just to down the shake.

Taste-wise, I’d compare it to those protein bars with loads of protein and artificial sweeteners: no way on earth you’d confuse it with a candy bar, and really an odd aftertaste, but not so bad that it’s unbearable. In this case, I kept thinking, “This isn’t awful,” but every time I took a drink, my face went involuntarily to a scrunched-up look of displeasure.

Bottom line? Not the worst that’s out there, but I’m also hoping it’s not the best!
