I bought the bodybugg “intelligent calorie management system”
Today I finally broke down and bought a bodybugg.
If you’re not familiar with the bodybugg, it’s a nifty little gadget that tracks actual calorie expenditure (or as close to it as you can get outside of a lab setting). There are two parts: an armband that you wear during all waking hours (except when you’re wet, so not in the shower or the pool), and a website that tracks the data. The big benefit is that it’s possible, with consistent food logging, to know exactly what your calorie deficit (and expected weight loss) is.
I’d been pining after one of these toys for a couple of months, and tried to convince Apex, the manufacturer, to give me one to review on this blog. Sadly, they completely ignored me (didn’t even write back to say no, which I though was somewhat rude).
Eventually I gave up checking my spam folder “just in case” and decided to plunk down the substantial chunk of change ($399) and buy the dang thing. One of the trainers at my local health club was nice enough to spend an hour showing me the bodybugg a month ago when I was looking at starting the Johnson UpDayDownDay diet, so I bought it through him (I’m assuming he gets a commission).
Setting the beast up was a bit annoying. First, I followed the included directions and logged into the site. I wasn’t very far into it when I encountered the following:
The bodybugg system will not work with the operating system you are currently using. You’ll need to upgrade your computer.
To learn more, click here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/howtobuy/default.asp
Given that I’m on a Mac, I found the statement about upgrading my computer a little insulting. (Understand that I’m OS-agnostic; the language just seems a little rude.) I hadn’t realized that it was Windows-only (given that it’s web-based, uses Java, and syncs through USB). I don’t usually worry about that since I also have a laptop running Windows Vista; I just would have liked to connect the USB sync device to my desktop, since it’s not constantly being moved.
No matter–I grabbed my laptop and proceeded to set up there. Only… the site suggested that Firefox is an option (it tested for browser compatibility as well as the OS, and Firefox passed), but it got increasingly buggy as I went through setup. One particularly bad window used only about a 150×250 pixel space to display everything (despite maximizing the window) and required a ridiculous amount of scrolling to answer the large number of questions… only to do nothing when I hit the “Done” button.
It eventually occurred to me that even though they seemed to support Firefox, their odd attachment to Microsoft might imply that Internet Explorer would work better. I pulled up IE7, logged in, and wha-la: success. Turns out that they have designed so thoroughly around IE that it’s pretty much inoperable in other browsers, which is poor design (in this web developer’s opinion) but manageable since I actually have the required hardware and software.
Once I got that all sorted out, I got asked about food preferences, goals, all that good stuff. I’m now the proud owner (no, wait, the site is subscription-based…) of a page with little charts on it.

You can definitely tell it’s an up day! No exercise, and a lot of food… but in my defense, I logged all the food I’m planning on eating today, not just what I’ve eaten so far. Guess I’d better get jogging or something!
Now one of the disappointments of the bodybugg (but I knew it before I bought it) is that it only tracks calories used, not calories consumed. I know, I’m kind of just nitpicking at this point, but logging my food is always the hardest part of dieting for me, and the bodybugg ad on the official site kind of seemed to imply that it tracked intake. I figured out early on that it doesn’t, but it’s still kind of sad for me.
However, one of the things that sold me on the bodybugg is how easy their food tracker is to use. They seem to be using the Java equivalent of AJAX to quickly pull up foods and make adding them a breeze. I’m interested to see how well their “frequent foods” stuff works, but that will take a couple of days of using it. In the meantime, the food database seems reasonable complete and I’m feeling hopeful.
More updates to come as I actually get data!
I have been wanting one of these devices for months and months and months. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on your updates– if it seems worthwhile, I’ll pick one up after I finally get some resistant debt under control.
I’m really liking it so far. And wouldn’t you know, a week after I bought it, bodybugg finally replied to let me know they were considering my request. I’m going to try and convince them to give me one to give away, build buzz, that kind of thing.
so how is it going? I hate tracking my food but need some help
I wish I could do some sort of hardware-only thing, just to get a # of calories burned during the day.
I recently discovered a website called SparkPeople (my username is, surprise, JosieNutter) and the food tracking database/UI totally rocks. I’ve been using it as a planner to plan all my meals out in advance to stay within a certain calorie range with a certain carb/fat/protein ratio. With the help, I’ve lost ~2lbs/wk for the last 3 weeks.
Hi, cynthia—I hate tracking food, too, but I’ve never been successful losing weight otherwise, just because that’s where I tend to get way off track; I can easily eat three times what I actually need, and tracking is the only thing that’s slowed that down.
On the other hand, my husband claims that if you are devoted enough to a sport, and just work (really hard!) on improving at the sport, the weight will go away without food tracking. It worked for him, so I don’t disagree, but I haven’t ever felt that passionate about working out.
The SparkPeople website that Josie mentioned is excellent (my username there is bookchiq if anyone wants to connect). I like the bodybugg better, but for free, SP is awesome, and gives us no excuse for not doing at least the minimum of tracking food and exercise.
I’ve been using BodyBugg for about two weeks now. I love the science behind it. I love seeing the numbers and understanding better how this thing called my body works. However, I’m extremely annoyed with the device itself and pretty pissed about the company’s unacceptable notion customer service.
1. My home laptop literally burned out (fan stopped working and motherboard fried) earlier this week. I tried uploading to my work laptop but kept getting error messages about Java problems. I called the tech support, waited for someone to answer for 20 minutes and hung up because I actually had work to do (imagine that!) and needed to go to a meeting.
So I emailed them with a picture of the error message attached asking for instructions to fix the problem. I waited two days for a response, which I expected would be in email so I could have a written reference for how to correct the problem. Instead, TWO days later, I found a voicemail waiting for me in my office asking me to call them back at the number that I originally called when I couldn’t get through to anyone!
2. This morning (same morning I found the voicemail), I woke up, and the cap was missing. I have no idea where it is or how it fell off, and ended up missing my morning workout because I kept looking for the cap. Considering the cap isn’t a tiny part that’s easily camouflaged by the deep red sheets on my bed, I don’t think I lost it or yanked it out of my sleep. So I must have lost it during the day without noticing it. How shoddily was this device manufactured? Under what conditions was it QA’d? It such a small and inexpensive piece of rubber/plastic that there’s no reason why there should have been a QA/manufacturing lapse great enough for me to have lost the cap.
So I called BodyBugg AGAIN - to discuss my original problems with the updating and the missing cap. This time, just because I was curious how long it would ACTUALLY take for someone to answer the phone, I waited for over an hour. At that point, I had to admit defeat and leave a phone message.
So here is my big gripe: why does it take so damned long for someone to answer the phone over there???? My theories:
1- No one actually works there.
2- There are SO many problems with the device that their representatives just can’t keep up with the number of calls, in which case, all of us suckers who bought the damned thing are SOL.
I apologize to all who read this, because I don’t understand fully the intention of a blog or what the protocol is to interact in a blog community. I was really looking for a current and active discussion forum but couldn’t find one. So if I’ve abused the purpose of this site with my complaint, I am truly sorry. I just needed to let the world know what’s happening and had to see if anyone’s had a similar experience and/or suggestions for a workaround…
Hi, Hannah—I don’t mind you leaving comments like this here at all; I’m not aware of an active forum, and I think it’s important for prospective bodybugg owners to get a balance understanding of the product (and the company!) before plunking down all that money.
I’ve generally had a better experience with the company than you have, but I also haven’t tried to call them up, either.
I get the impression that they’re a pretty small division of Apex (actually it seems like some kind of joint venture with BodyMedia, but I’m not sure), so they may very well be having some growing pains, but I hope they get it together soon!
Any other current bodybugg users have any comments on this?
Hi Hannah,
As a representative of bodybugg and Apex I’m very sorry you’ve had such a poor experience. We are constantly working very hard to improve bodybugg and the user experience, and at this point our top priorities are increasing our tech support staff (effective July 5), and improving the Installer/Driver software (which will greatly reduce the number of tech support issues). We agree with you that the current hold time for tech support is unacceptable.
If you know what address you sent your initial request to, I would be happy to follow up with the individual who manages that mailbox to find out why you did not receive a speedy response. In the future, please send any emails to info@bodybugg.com.
Regarding the missing cap on your device, I will find out if we can send you a replacement. If not, these are inexpensive and can be purchased on www.myapex.com. The devices are not “cheaply” manufactured–if that were the case we would be able to sell them at a much lower price. Personally I’ve found that often people don’t realize the armband is intended to be worn on the back of the arm, not sticking out to the side, and as a result they accidently hit the device on doorframes (for example) and dislodge the cap. It doesn’t sound like this is the case for you.
At this time we have 50K bodybugg users, and while we do have the occasional dissatisfied customer, overall bodybugg users achieve life-changing results with the program. Yesterday I received a testimonial from a woman who has been heavy her entire life and has never successfully lost weight, and with bodybugg she has shed 140 pounds (and counting).
Everyone here on the bodybugg team is passionate about the product, and we will do everything we can to support it and you.
You will see on the Apex Message Boards (www.myapex.com) that when consumers do connect with tech support, our analysts are friendly and helpful, as is the rest of our Customer Service team.
Regarding your Java issue, the quickest fix is to go to www.java.com and make sure you have the latest version installed on your computer.
If that doesn’t help, please send me an email or leave tech support a message with the specific day, time and phone number where you can be reached (and in front of your computer).
FYI BodyMedia is our development partner.
My email address is christie@apexfitness.com and I welcome any and all feedback, comments or questions. Thank you.
Hi Christie.
Thank you for a swift response! I didn’t expect any kind of reply from the company through this blog, and I appreciate it very much.
I love the device for what it does. It’s been a valuable experience in adjusting my workouts and diet. Being diabetic, I’ve always been very aware of my health issues, and this device is a wonderful tool - there’s no disputing that. I was deeply frustrated more than anything else, because I really want this to work!
I will email you later with the information you requested. At this point, by the time I resolve my technical issues, I will probably lose the data from earlier this week. That is the most disappointing part of the customer support experience - because, as I said, I really love having this level of detail data available.
I’ve worked with trainers for several years, and my trainer at 24 Fitness is definitely the most technically knowledgeable (on fitness - don’t know about his IT skills). He’s also the most professional I’ve ever known, and I respect his opinions a lot. So when he told me about BodyBugg, I was very excited about. Even my doctor is using it! And I expect that my ongoing experience with it will be great.
Because I live in Houston where I pretty much live in short-sleeved clothes. The device is always exposed, and so everyone asks me about it. So I want to tell them great things about it, because I just look like a fool if it doesn’t work! However, as far as results go, so far so awesome.
Anyway, my trainer was very specific when he handed me the device to tell me to remember to upload to a PC and through Internet Explorer and to wear it against the back of my arm. He’ll even adjust it while we work out if he sees that it’s moved out of place a little. So however the cap fell off, I don’t think it was from knocking into a wall or door (which I haven’t, and I’d at least remember knocking part if I had). Maybe it was just a fluke incident for me.
Well, I thank everyone here (the blog host, Christie, and all readers) for their feedback and time. Have a great day everyone!
HJI
FYI–the armband will hold at least 14 days’ worth of data.
Thanks!
Hello everyone,
My girlfriend has been eyeballing the Bodybugg for some time now which has sparked my interest seeing that both of us are now attempting to get back into the swing of things pertaining to weight loss. Since our diet plan is relatively strict with hardly any deviation or variation, we can easily determine our calorie intake without the need of the web program/log and or consultation/pep talks. I guess what I’m asking is can we utilize the bodybug device to determine caloric expenditure without a subscription?
We like the multi-sensor (temp, sweat, motion) approach of the Bodybugg, we just don’t understand what the 200 dollar subscription fee brings to the table when web programs offered by Biotrainer only run about 10 dollars a month.
Thanks for your time
Hello all,
I am considering buying a bodybugg. Though from what I have read so far, it seems the LARGE amount of money and the technical/buisness buggs, I will wait and hope to buy one in the future. One major comment I have is to say that I find it unacceptable to charge customers who put down $400.00 for a device to continue having to pay a monthly/yearly etc.. subscription to actually use the device– especially after only 3 months AND especially considering the bugs involved. I would also like to note that it appears $200 of the $400 is spent on teaching the consumer how to use the device and taking control over how they can use it.. So I do not consider this a sound investment– I get the sense that it is a great device but the price is arrogantly set far to high for the average consumer to access. So I will wait and see. Thanks for all the reviews. I hope this was appropriate.
Hi, Jenny, I hear you! It is very expensive, so definitely not for the faint-of-pocketbook, especially because so many people don’t actually use the gadgets they buy faithfully anyway. I struggle with that myself.
For me, the bodybugg is a helpful tool when I faithfully log my food as well. If I’m not logging, though, it’s not that useful. I’ve let my subscription lapse and will start it up again next month when I do my planned “kick start” diet for the winter. Until then, I’m not reliable enough to get much out of it.
I just wish there was a way to use it without the subscription– if there were, I’d go down to 24 Hour Fitness and pick up one today. I’d love to know how many calories I burn in an average day without additional weightlifting or cardio. But, since they don’t… I’ll probably end up with a Garmin Forerunner 305 to track my heartrate and daily bicycling commute instead. It’s a bit cheaper, has better software, and there is no subscription needed. The one time I sent email to BodyBugg asking about their food database (I cook all my own meals), they never responded to me. (Shrug.)
I found this all very interesting, I’ve wanted a body bugg ever since I first read about them. Right now I use a -fantastic- site called myfooddiary.com to track my calorie intake and the general consensus on their forums is that the body bugg food diary isn’t nearly as good, and obviously more expensive. Using the body bugg log, is there a way to simply input a -number- of calories instead of logging specific foods? If there is I could just take my daily number straight from myfooddiary.com and not have to bother with body bugg’s food log. I also think it kind of sucks they make you buy two “training sessions” along with the armband and subscription. Is there a way around that?
Thanks for the great post!
-Amelia
I just recently found out about bodybugg. Everyone has written about the actual product, but how about some blogs about actual weight lost and over what amount of time?
I have been reading about this device, thanks everyone for posting about their comments. I’ve been tracking my calorie intake and use via shapefit, if it doesn’t pan out, I may actually invest in one of these. The subscription should be free since the product costs so much. Thats the one thing thats holding me back.
Hi,
I am a Apple Mac user. I really would like one of these devices. A friend of mine came over and demo’d the unit. However, we could not get it to work since the device is Microsoft exclusive.
I do not and will not use bootcamp. Frankly, going out to buy XP or the like makes this product very very expensive and Microsoft products are buggy and given to viruses. A huge headache. I fear I would wind up supporting the OS and not reaching my goal, get in shape!
Is there a way to make this product to work on an Apple runing OS X 10.4.10? If so, how? Fortunately, I have a friend with the device so I can test it first.
Any advice would be great! If not, is there a product out there that is similar that is friendly to Apple?
David - right now, no - because they do browser/OS switching. And that’s just the basic problem.
I just started with BodyBugg, and being the geek I am I’d love to check out the raw data it outputs.
I’m going to fish for ways to do that, when I do I’ll write up a nice Python program to capture the data.
However - the bodybugg program is MUCH more than just the counting, its website is really awesome - the articles and food management (plus menu ideas and programs) are very useful.
However that doesn’t mean I should have to subscribe to it forever just to use the device. We’ll see….
Use your super tech skills and keep us posted Gregory!
Ok.I am not wealthy but I just bought a package at 24H fitness because a trainer that i really trust told me this thing really works……bodybugg for $289.00 minus $50…., 25 sessions of training for $1,500..for grand total of $1758 after taxes. I will let you guys know how it is going for me and whether this gadget is worth it (even at its reduced price). My weight loss goal is 25 pound! Tune in…
Gregory. I’ve figured out how to programmatically get at the raw data. I just don’t know what I’m looking at quite yet
Want to assist me in figuring this out
Here’s an example

I’ve seen some people around the gym wearing the thing, but I never asked them for their opinions so I’m glad to read some comments on your site.
I have been tracking the comments and considering buying a BodyBugg. For others in the same situation, an FYI. In the past 2-3 days, my fitness center has posted a 1/2 price sale on the BB noting that new models are coming and they are clearing out the old. Maybe this is not news, but for anyone considering a purchase, it might be worth the wait to see the new unit.
Hi everyone,
As a member of the bodybugg development team, I wanted to clarify any confusion regarding the versions of bodybugg that are available and when the next version will be released.
Currently versions 1 and 2 are in circulation. They look identical to one another (except if you look on the back of the armband, and you’re looking at a version 2, you’ll see “V2″ at the top).
The only other difference between versions 1 and 2 is that version 2 is compatible with the new accessory, the digital display, and version 1 is not.
If you think you might want to use the digital display, it’s important to make sure you’re purchasing a version 2 armband (the digital display and the armband must be worn simultaneously).
Version 3, which we hope will feature heart rate information and will be 40% smaller, has a projected release date of late 2008.
Our top two development priorities for 2008 are becoming Mac-compatible and improving/expanding our food database.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions at christie@apexfitness.com.
Thanks!
For those of you looking for information about how I’ve been able to stick with the bodybugg, I’ve just posted a new entry called My bodybugg results over several months. I’d be interested to hear from any of you who’ve been using it for a while, too.
Henry- If you manage to figure out how the raw data is reported I’d be really interested. The only thing keeping me from getting one is the expensive subscription! Any progress?
Yes, I’ve figured out of to get all of the data off. What I have not figured out is how to convert this data to calories and steps (which is all I need). It really sucks that the keep you locked in to that expensive subscription fee. I’m at the point now where I have just about reached my weight loss/fitness goals and I just need to dust the bodybugg off when I want to try something new. It’s really a nice device. I just don’t know why I can’t have my data. It’s MY data. They make a stand alone application (http://www.sensewear.com/solutions_wms.php) so what’s the big deal about giving me a comma delimited text file with a date/time, calories and steps.
The link I posted was to a web based application as well. Anyone know if SenseWear BMS is web based? (http://www.sensewear.com/solutions_bms.php)
Henry - The SenseWear armband does not measure calories burned. It measures, movement, body temperature, heat flux and galvanic skin response and reports them with a time stamp. That’s it. The calculation of calories burned, energy expenditure, sleep duration and physical activity are all based on calculations taken from these five parameters. Contact me at devries77@cfl.rr.com if you are interested in further communication on this subject.
Just wanted to let you guys know that sometimes the gyms that sell the Body Bugg have specials. A few weeks ago, I had asked my trainer about the device (I am subscribed to the Body Bugg website for a trial period through my trainer and LOVE the food logging aspect–complete with charts on fat, carb, and protein content). Just yesterday he told me that our gym was having a special with a VERY significant discount. I think I might convince my hubby to buy me one for a very early Christmas present!
Yes, I understand that it calculates calories from these values. I can exctact the raw data that the armband collects, with a few lines of code. I know what it collects. I just dont know how to turn that into [timestamp, calories, steps]…yet. What aggravates me is that I can’t have a simple application that will give me [startdate, enddate, calories burned, steps] based on that data. In short, I’m passed the point of having to log food every day, but would like to keep my bodybugg to see how changes in my routine affect calories/steps/activity.
except now they are moving tech support out of the US…
I recently bought the digital display for my V2 body bugg and I have to say that I love it. I use the trip meter all the time. Mainly to get an idea for where my calories are after my last upload so I can get a better idea of when and how much to eat. So far I am right on goal for body fat and weight loss and its been 3 weeks. I know thats not very long but considering the fact that I couldnt keep up with calories in and out, even with the body bugg, this was a huge thing for me. All told I have been using the bugg for 35 weeks but the digital display really brought it home.
I am equally stoked to get the V3 when it comes out. I think the device will be even better when it can track heart rate. To be honest I’m not sure how the body bugg is so acurate without that data but the numbers don’t lie, I’m lossing wieght and inchs just as my current program predicts.
I have always been up for the work outs but sucked horribly at the dieting, the body bugg has been my answer to that problem. It can be monsterously frustrating to spend hours in the gym cranking out the weights or grinding on the treadmill and still have that layer of popin’ fresh dough. maybe now the hard work in the gym will finaly show to its full potentual. So far so good!
For the software developers among us:

Thanks, Henry!
I’ve been wearing my Bodybugg for 32 weeks now. It’s the best investment I’ve ever made. The monthly subscription fee is worth every penny in my opinion. Most of the food you eat is probably already in the food tracker. If not, it’s very easy to add your own custom foods/meals. Logging meals takes less than 5 minutes a day after you get used to it. I can’t wait to get the digital display. I’ve recently reached my weight loss goals thanks to my Bodybugg and I keep wearing it because I’m hooked! It’s the best investment you can make if you’re serious about losing weight and looking fabulous!!
A couple of folks have mentioned gyms with deep discounts - I would love to know which gyms are offering those discounts … please do tell!
Thanks!!
I don’t know for sure, but I think that 24 Hour Fitness is one very likely club, because they’re affiliated with Apex, the company that’s marketing the bodybugg.
Hopefully some folks who have bought the bodybugg at a discount will chime in and tell you where!
My local club is offering a discount on the V1 currently selling for $199. However, it is locally owned, so only useful for people in or near Cleburne, TX. If anyone is interested in more details, please post a comment.
I have been on BodyBugg for 5 weeks and have lost 15 pounds. I got it through 24 Hour Fitness for $299.
There is no magic in losing weight. You have to burn more calories than you are eating - plain and simple. Logging your food is the only way to keep yourself accountable for what you put in your mouth. I would recommend sticking with the pre-planned menus until you have a feel for what your calorie level should be. I have only deviated from the menus once since being on the program, and it has worked!
Good luck to you all.
I have been researching and I am very interested in the BodyBugg. Trying to convince the wife I could benefit from it, but of course. I have said that about, hypnosis, 6-7 diet plans, trainers, and god knows what else.!!
When I was researching the Bodybugg, I came across the Actitrainer. From everything I can tell, it’s the same… and it’s used by Harvard, the CDC, etc. The big difference is it’s like $200 cheaper. Only $198. Has anybody bought one? What do you think of it? I don’t think they are really marketing them to the public…or if they are, they’re not doing a good job. Does anybody know if Apex bought the technology from Actigraph? Just curious.
24hrfitness.com had them as cheap as $220 a few days ago. Now, they’re back up to $349. Pricing seems to vary a lot! (I almost bought one, procrastinated two hours… and then the discount was gone. :()
Is anyone else having problems with the bodybugg website? I have a bodybugg and I haven’t been able to get onto the website for 2 days. Every time I try it just says the website is down. I am too addicted to bodybugg to not see how many calories I’m burning!!
Hi, Meghan, there was a short period yesterday when I couldn’t get on, but generally haven’t had any trouble. You might want to check with tech support if you’re still not able to get on.
I stumbled upon this blog and am so happy to see other people benefiting from Bodybugg! I got mine about 8 months ago and love it so far. The fact that I have to manually enter my food into the tracker helps keep me honest and making good choices. I also love knowing that if I just absolutely MUST have that popcorn at the movie - I’ll just have to run when I get home.
I have a question for everyone - what kind of batteries are you using? I have had pretty poor battery life and am considering switching to rechargeable. I’m wondering if anyone else has tried that and with what effects. Thanks!
Hi, Stacey,
I’m with you! The bodybugg is saving me this week while I’m at a conference. Otherwise I’d have no idea what I was burning and totally overeat.
I’ve used rechargeable NiMH batteries mostly, and they seem to last a little less time than alkaline batteries, but it doesn’t matter because I always keep one charged.
In my experience, the alkaline batteries last me about a week each, and the NiMH maybe five or so days. I expect this varies based on how often you remove and sync it (my theory is that the buzzing uses way more juice than passive monitoring).
Anyone else have thoughts on that?
Can any current users comment on how big it is, how comfortable it is to wear and how difficult it is to hide under your clothes?
Thanks!
So, I bit the bullet and bought the Actitrainer. It’s really small…about the size of a pack of Extra gum. You can wear it on your waist, arm, or ankle. I wear it on my waist–and it’s as comfy as any pedometer. I like that I can see my steps, distance, heart rate, and calories burned all on the device–without having to plug it into my computer or buy a watch monitor like with the bodybugg. So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised both by how much I burn (in a good way)… and yet how long I’m inactive during certain parts of the day. It’s definitely a wake-up call!
I just got my BodyBugg Friday night. I ordered it from 24hourfitness.com when it was on sale for $279 with free shipping and a 3 mo sub (cheaper than many on ebay!!). Yesterday was the first time I wore it. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is not uncomfortable (it just feels like … well … something strapped around your arm!). I am hoping that after I wear it for a bit, I will not notice it anymore.
RE: the size, it is about 3.5″ high, 2.5″ wide (not including the loops that the strap goes through), and not quite 1″ deep at the thickest part. I don’t think it is noticable under my clothes, but having worn it for only two days, I could be kidding myself!
It helps that it is cold out - more clothes = more coverage.
Last night my husband happened to touch my arm and asked what it was - he did not notice it all day and would not have known it was on if he didn’t happen to touch my arm, so I guess it is not too obvious. I plan to wear it with a regular t-shirt when I work out, so that should cover it, too.
Having said that, the online features are VERY cool!! The detail is amazing. I have been wearing my pedometer to see how similar they are - almost spot on!! I plan to start logging my food this week (I have really only been dabbling with the BB this weekend) - that should be really interesting. Looking forward to my first coaching session and starting to really leverage everything that the BB has to offer … my doctor is excited about it, too!
Fingers crossed!
I used the body bugg for the three months. Over all it was a good tool and a piece of the fitness puzzle I am learning about. I am debating on spending another $100 for a year of use. The biggest benefit is writing down what you eat makes you awear of how much you do eat. Calories in does not necesssarily mean calories out. check out www.releasingfat.com
I WAS WONDERING HOW ACURATE THIS DEVICE IS ON MEASURING YOUR CALORIES BURNED. IM CONCERNED IT WONT BE ACURATE AND THATS ALOT OF MONEY. I DONT NEED TO LOSE MUCH WEIGHT, AND AM WORKING ON MUSCLE GAIN. WILL THIS WORK FOR THAT ALSO. PLEASE RESPOND THANKS
Hi, Shawn—it’s a little tricky for a home user to know for sure how accurate any system is, because only with extremely precise lab measuring can you get accurate numbers to measure against.
However, the bodybugg folks claim (I think) 92% accuracy, meaning it could be off by roughly 8%, but is still much more accurate than just guessing at energy expenditure.
Personally, I compare what the bodybugg says to how my weight and body fat percentage changes, and while I can’t claim to keep perfect records, I believe the bodybugg is very accurate for around-the-house kinds of activities and activities that use the accelerometer.
I’ve been less impressed by its measure of activities that don’t activate the accelerometer as much (like cycling), because both perceived exertion and body changes suggest that it’s undercounting a bit.
That said, I’d much rather it undercount than overcount, and by and large I’ve found it to be accurate enough to drop the pounds I wanted to lose (not quite there yet but almost!).
I think its fairly acurate. it did sort of go crazy when I was using a jack hammer saying I was burning 4000 calories and all I was doing was balancing it and getting my arms shook. I plan on paying for another year of use.
I think it is fairly accurate, too. The first week I had it I wore a pedometer, too. They were pretty much in sync. The only exception was when I took a boxing class - my ped read higher, but I think that was just from all of the bounching/punching (like when I road a train - my ped gave me thousands of steps for sitting still!!). I like it - it is very insightful. If I start leveraging the food log, I am sure it will be even more beneficial. I am only a month in, but am already thinking that, when the time comes, I will probably renew.
I think I’ll wait til one of these babies falls under a 100 dollars or by chance someone got discouraged and threw it in the park while they were jogging
I am impressed with the Bodybugg BUT I have to be honest when I say I think its just a very expensive calorie counter. I am a personal trainer and our gym pushes it like crazy. Not to many purchase it after we explain what it does and then the price. All it does is count calories used not consumed so I cant see how it is a vital tool. Now if it counted calories consumed and burned it would be perfect. I tell my clients its nice but not “needed”. If you eat right, do cardio and weight train, you will get the same results with or without a Bodybugg.
A cheaper (no subscription fee) and perhaps better alternative is the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Watch with Heartrate tracker( $200 at Amazon.com) and a program called Diet Power($49.99 at dietpower.com).
The GPS watch will accurately track your distance and speed during exercise. You then enter the info in to the Diet Power software which also lets you log your daily food intake and gives you an adjusted calorie budget based on your desired weight (taking into account fluctuations in your metabolism based on daily/weeking weighing).
Also the Forerunner GPS plugs into your computer and comes with exercise tracking software that can help you
improve your workouts.
P.S. The Garmin Forerunner 101 is only $87.99 with free shipping.
I think these body bugs are to much money. The average person can’t spend that much on an item like that. I think that people should write down the food they have eaten on paper or the computer. That is for the people who can’t put a bodybugg. Good luck to all who have it!
I have owned the buddybug for 5 weeks now and love it to death! I can be successful at losing weight, but changing my body composition has been a struggle that I have not been able to overcome. I love the fact I can plan my meals ahead so my fat/carb/protein intake is where I want it to be; or if I have gotten off course during the day, I can go in and strategically plan the rest of my daily meals to compensate. Seeing the progress of my Fat Body Mass decrease also keeps me very motivated. Otherwise, I would just be dependent upon the scale once more, without actually knowing if I am truly becoming leaner. I did buy this through 24 Hour Fitness at a much lower price than purchasing through Apex and the first 6 mos membership is included for those considering joining a gym
doesn’t it feel weird wearing it everyday everywhere?
I have been on the Bodybugg program for over 25 weeks. And I have lost over 60 pounds. It really does work.
I bought a heart rate monitor for $50 (which you would still need to monitor the efficiency and safety of your workouts unless you use a machine with a built in HR monitor)
I bought a subscription to calorieking.com for $30, it has a huge updating database of foods and lets you track your favorite foods and enter calories burned per day (and there are other sites like this where you only pay once). You would still need to track your serving sizes and foods consumed with the bodybugg. Calorieking has a palm add-in if you have trouble recalling throughout the day. CK calculates targets within the program like “to reach a BMI of X you need to lose X pounds” .
From there, the only thing left is to set targets - you can get your basal metabolic rate using a free online calculator, then you set your targets for calories consumed and calories burned.
A one-time $80 investment 3 years ago, and I’ve been successfully managing my weight with no worries.
I think it would be a pain to wear something on my arm all the time, and at $400 at the outset, plus a subscription cost, this gadget seems like something straight out of an airline catalog - for people who are lured into paying a lot of money for something very “personalized” instead of doing some simple addition and subtraction to apply readily available formulas like BMR and BMI to their weight loss plan.
The problem for us MAC people is the product is not an option for us.
After discussing it and potential “experiments” with the folks over at Lyle McDonald’s board, I finally decided to bite the bullet and pick one up. (I got mine through 24 Hour, too– and they gave me a metric butt-ton of protein cookies for free, weird.) I’ve had it for a little over a day, and it’s interesting to see how many calories random things burn– such as playing with the cats, cleaning the house, and rocking out to Guitar Hero on my Xbox 360. :p
overpriced
Thanks for all the recent comments, folks! For those of you questioning the cost vs. results, you might be interested in my follow-up post that discusses both more in depth.
There have also been several questions about the comfort of wearing the bodybugg. For me (and everyone I’ve talked to about it), it’s pretty much a non-issue. It’s basically like a wristwatch: it feels weird for the first day or so and then you get used to it.
I wear my bodybugg 24/7 with the exception of showers (yeah, even at night), and if it starts to irritate me (feel itchy, whatever) I’ll move it up or down slightly on my arm.
It’s also very inconspicuous. Even under slim-fitting sweaters (which I should mention I can now wear!) it’s not obvious. I do get lots of questions when I wear very short-sleeve shirts or tank top bike jerseys, but I’m quite proud of my progress so I don’t mind talking about it at all.
If you have a Mac, get one with an Intel processor and set up Boot Camp so that you can run the Microsoft applicaition(s).
I purchased my body bugg yesterday and I can tell I will be addicted….at least for a little while. If anyone is interested and has access to a 24 hour fitness check out the following deal I got. I paid $403 out the door and received the body bugg AND 4 - 50 minute personal training session with a 24 fitness personal trainer.
BODYBUGG SALE ($100 OFF):
http://mystore.24hourfitness.com/product_details.php?item=400005298004
Just wanted to point out to anyone interested that 24hr fitness has a special going for the NEXT FIVE DAYS ONLY (or so it would appear). The Bodybugg armband for only $249.99!!!!!!! If you want the digital display (a watch-like device that will track your caloric expenditures) it’s an additional $99. $100 Off!??!? YEA!!!!!!!!!! :o)
I too was wanting to get a bodybugg’s for both me and the wife, however it was too expensive at this time to do that… however after research into the ActiTrainer that other mentioned above I looked into that and thought that their multiple user subsciption saves me alot of money and makes more sense.. plus the device comes with everything you need to get started the device (rechargeable battery included), software, heart rate monitor from POLAR.. a belt holster, and an arm band for those who would prefer to wear the device on their arms. All in All it made better financial sense for us to get started on our plans to lose the weight in 2008. P.S. we have had them for 5 days now … and LOVE them!
Has anyone else had a problem with the Digital Display for the BodyBugg? When I sync to the computer, the “calories burned” show to be higher on the computer than what the Digital Display is showing. It’s not by a small margin either… the difference can be up to 400 calories. Any suggestions? Otherwise, I love the Bodybugg. I got it for Christmas and I’ve already lost 3 pounds!
I’ve noticed that the separate display jumps out of sync with the actual Bugg quite often. Usually mine syncs back up when I try to change modes and then hit the button on the Bugg.
I’m glad I found this blog!
The BodyBugg site really does make it seem that it counts calories going IN as well as going out - and I know how I can track my outgoing calories, but who sits there and counts how many Hershey’s Kisses they eat?
This seems like an extremely expensive piece of equipment to link you to an extremely expensive food tracker.
I use SparkPeople.com (like a few others who have already mentioned it.. same name if anyone wants to connect) which provides you with a free food tracker, a free water tracker, a free exercise and calorie tracker… as well as a community of people just like us, teams to join, and a personal page/blog/gallery to keep track of our successes in.
Whether you’re 25 pounds or 250 pounds, I think the over $200 cost of BodyBugg is not worth it. Thank you all for saving me some money!
I have been using the bugg for a few weeks now. I’m not sure it’s worth the high price, but I am having ‘fun’ with it anyway. Personally, I find tracking calories in to be one of the key parts of losing or maintaining weight, so I don’t have a problem using their site (I used to track my food on Spark People before that).
I do think the bugg has given me a better intuitive sense of how much I should be eating. On sedentary days, I only have 3 (of 5, normally) of the portioned meals I cook out in advance on the weekends. On less sedentary days (let’s say I plan on spending the whole day cleaning, doing laundry, etc), I have maybe 4. On active days (+cardio or weight training), I eat all 5.
Thank you everyone for all your input and comments! This has been so great to read and get insight! I am considering a bugg, however the price really is so high!
Lipsforfrogs, I have a bodybug for sale. I got it about a month ago for my wife, but we are going to have a baby and really dont need it now. Email me if interested. bodebldr2000@yahoo.com
BB2K,
OH! my goodness! If only…
Last night before i went to bed…. i bit the bullet and purchased one. It was reeeealy on sale and i got free shipping. SHOOT! BUT… i Do have a sister that might be interested, so i will for sure pass on the information to her. Thank you So much for the offer!
CONGRATS on the new baby! How exciting!
Did you use it during that month? if so, how did you like it?
My wife and I both used it. I compete in bodybuilding from time to time and it was really cool to see my progress. My wife loved it to, she said it made her feel more responsible and dedictaed to stick to her diet. The numbers do not lie. lol Just let me know if/when ya want it. I have explained to my wife that while pregnant, I want her to be HUGE! lol
What if you’re trying to gain weight? Just eat more than what this thing says you lost during your workouts? My wife and I just started on the body for life program only about 4 days into it, both the workout and eating part of the program. Would I really need this to go along with that program or is this just something supplemental.
I can understand the high price for the BB, but also paying for the website is what is making me dislike the whole thing. I have the 30 day trial, but after that doubt i will renew.
Hi, Matt,
I’m not a nutritionist (or anything like it!) but assuming your body fat percentage is over 5% (as a guy), I would expect that if you eat the high-protein foods that the Body for Life program mandates (up to or maybe slightly above your calorie burn rate) as well as doing their workouts, you’ll probably see your body fat drop while your lean mass, and overall weight, increases.
In your case, you might find Physics Diet almost as helpful as a bodybugg, especially in combination with a body fat scale.
I have been in the fitness industry for over 23 years and I can honestly say that the Bodybugg is the best device for weight management I have ever seen. I have been using mine for about 1 1/2 years and love it. It is simple and it works! Much cheaper than hiring a personal trainer, and you’ll probably get better results….. if you use it. If you don’t, then it will be just like your infomercial stuff sitting unused in the corner of your room - useless
You will learn more about your body and how it works in a couple of weeks than you can imagine. So if you are serious and want to manage your weight. Get it.
Just ordered from 24hour fitness for $279.99 plus free ground shipping. Leary if it means a new version is coming out next month. Also, there is no way of telling if it is v1 or v2, but I did not order the digital display, regardless.
Bodybugg things that make me wonder???
I am a 24 Hour Fitness Hall of Fame Master trainer and believe that our Apex people are very bright. However, I had a long term client that has been sporting the Bugg for 6 plus weeks now that recently had to change her schedule due to a new job. She arrived in the gym this am ready to go to work and a bit sleepy. Nonetheless, girl is hard core, young and a a warrior . We performed every exercise to the absolute limit as always and while she was burning 6.1 calories per minute on friday afternoon doing very similar activity…this am she was only around 2.5 calories per minute for 50 minutes while leg pressing 420 lbs for 12 perfect reps and deadlifting 135 lbs x 16 very awesome reps…we are still at 2.5.
I talked to a couple of my long term co workers about this post work out and they suggested she had left this thing in sleep mode up to 7 am and when I called her this pm…she had. However, isn’t a calorie burned…a calorie burned…even when sleeping. I don’t get it.
Hi, Joey, I’ve noticed the same thing happening so I’ve “expanded” my day to start earlier and end later in order to capture everything.
I’m guessing that the sleep mode is a power-saving feature to try to prolong the battery life (or possibly it’s just to try and rule out putting up excess calorie burn for people who toss and turn a lot?). Not really sure, though, so maybe someone from bodybugg will weigh in.
But what I think he means is, even if you’re tossing and turning in your sleep, you’re still burning the calories that it takes to toss and turn. So say she was doing leg presses in her sleep, she’d still be burning nearly as many calories as she would have doing leg presses while awake.
Hello all,
The armband was designed so that anytime you’re actually wearing it, it will collect your data (even if you’re wearing it during a designated off-body time). So if your normal wake time is 7 am, and you get up and put on the armband at 6:30 am, the armband will begin collecting data at 6:30 am rather than 7. In other words, wearing the armband will always trump a scheduled off-body time.
Joey–in the case of your client, based on your description she is probably extremely fit, and as you know, the more fit you are the fewer calories you burn during any activity. 2.5 cals/minute during leg presses is probably correct, especially if she is a small, fit person who regularly lifts that much weight. Remember that during leg presses only the legs are doing the work–the rest of the body is being supported by the leg press machine.
When she burned 6.1 cals/minute, what was she doing differently than when she was only burning 2.5 cals/minute? Was she using her entire body and not just her legs?
In any case, anytime you question your calories burned, you can do two things: perform a firmware upgrade (use this URL http://www.bodybugg.com/firmware.php) and if you continue to see the same results, you can then call tech support to troubleshoot at 866 314 9423.
Please feel free to contact me with any and all questions and feedback. Thank you.

Honestly I don’t get it. Its like putting sand in your gas tank and monitoring how far the car can go. If all the people using the bodyBUGG spent as much time in planning designing and executing your eating and exercise plan you would be much better off. Professionals are starting to spend more time with a nutrition scale and internet food site along with a good exercise plan that delivers results. Isn’t it important to know how much potassium a day you are getting in your diet than how many calories you burned? Thats my 2 cents!!!!
Hi, Frankie, you make some good points. I’m not sure if you’re aware that the bodybugg subscription also includes tools for planning and tracking food, including nutritional breakdowns and recommendations.
In my experience, the draw of the bodybugg is that it consolidates all of the disparate pieces of info into one location and helps me see how they all affect each other. With the bodybugg, it becomes obvious pretty quickly if I’m putting sand in the gas tank.
Christie Renick,
Do you have a firm date as of yet for the release of V3? Thanks!
Also, I was wondering about it’s use while cycling. Wouldn’t the other sensors help calculate the cal burn even without the movement… or do you have to have the movement. By the way, 24 fitness has them on sale right now, with link at the top of the page for $199…
Hello everyone,
Regarding Version 3 of the bodybugg armband . . .
It will be smaller and lighter.
It will feature a rechargeable battery.
It will be more water resistant (but not water proof).
It will feature a 3-axis accelerometer (V1 and V2 are 2-axis).
We were unsuccessful in integrating heart rate information into the armband, but will continue to work on this as it is a very popular request.
We hope to release V3 this fall.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions christie@apexfitness.com.
Thanks!
Is there any chance that owners of the V1 or V2 will be able to upgrade for less than the cost of a new one?
I have also noticed that my calorie burn for cycling is considerably lower than expected (as a previous post noted).
BTW–I love this thing! It has been the best weight loss tool I have ever used.
A
Hi everyone,
The “Sensewear” already has the smaller unit with the 3-axis accelerometer (instead of the current 2-axis in the V2 current “bodybugg”). You can find the info at sensewear.com or bodymedia.com, not sure of the price.
If the rep is still checking this site I have a question!
I am a mac user and have been waiting and waiting! You didn’t mention if V3 was going to be mac compatible? You didn’t mention it so I assume it is not but would like to have that confirmed so I can go ahead and get one now if the new ones for fall will not be mac compatible. (I will just have to pay $200 for a copy of Windows! GRR) BUT! I will continue to hope until I hear otherwise! Thanks Christie!
Hi everyone (again!)
I just spoke with an extremely helpful rep with Bodymedia who are the ones who actually write the software ect…..It’s their baby, just google it! Anyway, the new model that has just been released is TINY and thin, water resistant, has the 3-axis feature, and also monitors your sleep and sleep efficiency. For the armband, the display, and SIX months subscription the total price is $459. If you think about it, $224 from 24 hour for the armband (or $299 from Apex) + $99.99 for the display + 6 months subscription…..the brand new one with the new technology is a better deal in the long run! Also, I am a mac user, and no, it is not going to be mac compatible as of yet, but the rep did say that of course they would offer it first (obviously) and that if you already had a unit…it’s just going to be a software update, so no biggie there. Seriously, it IS a lot smaller folks! (and of course more sensitive, ect..ect… newer technology for an already great product!) So that is the price of the new one, and go to the website and check it out!!
The phone number to reach them if you have questions is 412-288-9901
Oh, they also have a great video on the website.
and no I do NOT work for them! LOL
I have never even called them or known how much their unit sold for until this morning when I called!
(I actually had thought they ONLY sold to the medical professionals, but as I learned today, that is not the case!)
I am just what people call an “early adopter” most of the time anyway, and if I can have the newer version NOW…then why would I pay for the older version.
@Sussurro: Thanks so much for this info! It looks like a great improvement; I’m very curious to see how it performs on exercises that I’ve had trouble with, like cycling. Hopefully that 3-axis accelerometer will help!
I’m really surprised that they haven’t made Mac compatibility a priority by now, just because the general demographic that uses Macs seems like an obvious target for something sleek and gadgety.
Thanks for doing the leg-work on this info!
@ Sarah: The rep I spoke with said that cycling is EXACTLY why they tried to improve it! (because of spin classes also, that they had a lot of feedback about that!)
I’m with you on the mac theory!!
We are pretty much as a general rule, early adopters of anything sleek, new, and technologically advanced!
At least when they DO finally get it mac compatible (and he did say it is something of a priority and that they ARE working on it) at least he said it would be a software/firmware update and not a case of having to buy a new unit!! Yes, I specifically ask that question!
Anyway, I really hope this info helps out some others that come here. I know I have been following your blog here almost since you started it last summer and you have helped me out with info as well as a few friends I directed here!
Sometimes a little “legwork” is well worth the effort!
Especially when you can give back to the people who gave you information. You know….the whole “karma” thing and all!!
I’ll be happy to let you know what I think of the new one when I have had a bit of time to form opinions if you would like.
Have a great day, and thanks for such a great blog Sarah!
I started using a body bugg the last week of January and have lost 25 pounds! It keeps me honest about what I’m eating and I’ve learned so much about the calorie count of different foods. I’m not starving and I eat foods I like, just smaller quantities. It’s not been a hard ship at all. And the calories burned/day info has made me aware of how sedentary I was and it is an encouragement to keep adding a little more exercise each day. I’m hooked!
Forgot to ask.. Does anyone know if you can transfer your subscription to another person? If I upgrade to the newer model, a friend has said she would be interested in using my old one.
I purchased the bodybugg and watch and had great results with it. When I first started the website was a great benefit but once you learn how to eat then it really is not needed if you have the watch that provides instant readout on calories burned.
The biggest problem is that they do not tell you that you have to keep the subscription to their website in order to use the bugg. It only has a two week memory so when the memory is full you have to upload it to the website. Had they mentioned that I would have to continue a subscription to the website, I would have never purchased it, instead going with a top of the line heart rate monitor that had calorie readout. Don’t get me wrong, the bodybugg is terrific, if they provided software that you could purchase and install on your own computer system so you didnt need the website subscription, I would highly recommend the product to everyone.
I thought that the Body Bugg sensed, in someway, how many calories you took in based on a physical change in your body chemistry and add the number of calories to the Body Bugg. If and when you exercised, it subtracted the number of calories. If you just log your foods on a website, I don’ t see how it is any different from any other web based diet and exercise program. Can someone explain if I am incorrect.
@bh77: You’re correct. You have to log food to get a (moderately) accurate idea of how many calories you’re taking in, but the point of the bodybugg is to tell you how many calories you’ve burned. It’s the combination that tells you your net calories for the day.
After I lost about 35lb, I have been in the plateu stage for almost 4 months now.. I am trying to figure out why I am not loosing.. for 2 months now, I am working out , do not eat that much but still.. I am consedering bodybugger.. Do you think it will help?
@Roo: if you’re still motivated to spend time working out and tracking food, the bodybugg will probably help you pinpoint the problem. If you are struggling to work out regularly, it might boost your motivation, or it might be an expensive paperweight.
Thank you for your reply. I did bought it and it is so far helping me alot in tracking my calories. What realy now confuses me is the concept it supports to loose weight. “Burn more than what you consume”.. Does it matter where the consumed calories are coming from? The burned calories if it is comming as a result of fat burning or sugar and carb burning? Can I eat whatever kind of food I want as long as I am in my calories range???????!!
That’s right! You could consume all your calories in vodka if you wanted to.
Of course this is purely for weight loss and not for health…
WOWWWW.. This is good news for me .. not the vodka
it is the fact that I can eat CHOCLATE..
The only problem is, delicious stuff like chocolate normally eats up your calorie allotment too quickly. *sigh*
i was just wondering about the new version of the body bugg. is this the same one advertised on www.sensewear.com? it seems that one is already available but you have to contact them for pricing. i’m just confused on if it’s the same product, same company or same product, different company or what? i would rather have the new smaller version!
@Roo: the bodybugg folks will tell you that a calorie is a calorie. I tend to think that’s true, to a point.
There’s two issues, though…
First, some types of calories leave you feeling fuller than others. Amelia mentioned that the yummy stuff uses up your calorie allotment too quickly, and for most people, “junk food” will leave you feeling hungrier than if you ate the same number of calories of “healthy food.”
Second, there is some research that suggests that it’s not so simple as “a calorie is a calorie.”
Bottom line, basic common sense probably does apply.
regarding the senswear WMS, the subscription costs a lot more than the bodybugg (apex).
it costs $5 a week.
so for 3 months, it would be $50, 6 months would be $120, and 12 months would be $260.
that was the deciding factor for me as to whether i should buy the smaller, more expensive sensewear WMS or the larger, less expensive bodybugg. in the long run, the sensewear WMS is going to cost you more. granted, i think the software is better and gives you more information.
to sally:
the sensewear WMS was orginally geared towards healthcare providers in a clinical setting. both the sensewear and bodybugg technology is made by body media. body media and apex joined together to market the bodybugg to consumers in the gym setting. the sensewear WMS is now available to the general public. but because of its original focus for healthcare providers, the software is a little different. so they are pretty much the same, but the sensewear WMS is about 50% smaller. i would have shelled out more money for the smaller size, but just couldnt justify it with the way higher price for the subscription.
I love the bodybugg! I have lost 11 lbs. in 3 weeks. As long as you take the time to enter what you eat and be honest, this awesome device will work fo you. By the way…don’t spend $399.00….go to E-bay like I did…. or the 24 hr. fitness web-site: www.24hourfitness.com. I saw it there today for only $249.00. I can’t say enough great things. My goal is to lose 50 lbs and I’m on my way…FINALLY!!!!
Good luck.
Hi Sally,
I own the WMS sensewear, I purchased it March 29, 2008. If you have any questions about it I will be happy to answer them! By the way, the cost for the subscription for the sensewear is $138.00 per year vs. Bobybugg’s $99. per year, it is NOT $260 per year, or even $120 for 6 months! Hope this helps!
@Sarah, I will post everything I know, have learned, and experienced with the unit as soon as I can. My daughter has been ill, and she was operated on today .. so it may be a bit before a full post.
Just a quick couple of thoughts, I LOVE IT! It is a LOT smaller, the software is fantastic, (and yes I have two people close to me who use the Bodybugg, and they are jealous of the software! LOL and no “down-time according to them they always have problems logging… I have never had one) I have lost 13 pounds in 3 weeks of use, although some of that I am sure has also been stress related with my child’s surgery, ect…
P.S. @ Sally
I paid $459.00 for the armband AND the watch AND a 6 month subscription. That was the total for all.
hi sussurro,
i wish i would have spoken to the salesperson you dealt with!
i wonder why the conflicting quote on the price of the subscription.
based on the $260/year quote i was given, i didnt want to buy the sensewear WMS and have since purchased a bodybugg.
had i been given the $138 price, i would have definitely gone with the sensewear WMS.
whom did you speak with at bodymedia?
thanks!
JOYCE
it is the price quoted on the order form itself that I am quoting so I do not understand the conflict either as it is printed on their order form that everyone uses.
As I said, I got the unit, two band sizes, the watch, and the 6 month subscription for a total of $459.00
The exact prices listed on the order form are as follows:
Programs:
Weight Management (renewals) - 3 months
Part # 100276
$69.00
Weight Management (renewals)- 6 months
Part # 100282
$104.00
Weight Management (renewals) - 12 months
Part # 100413
$138.00
** It comes with a subscription (as does the bodybugg) mine came with a 6 month subscription.
It states clearly that the order form is effective AS OF February 28, 2008 so it was clearly just recently revised… shouldn’t matter who you talk to I wouldn’t think!!

(I am not at home, so I do not have the name, but I do have the order form, my receipt, ect..stored on this laptop, so that info I shared is accurate.
Also the amount I paid as I am ACUTELY aware of THAT!!
I thought I had purchased on the 28th of March, but I see it was March 31, 2008 and I paid to have them overnight it, it arrived April 1, 2008, so we are only talking a few weeks ago!
P.S. Let me also reiterate, it is worth every penny !!
sussurro,
did you order it over the phone with a body media rep?
or did they send you information?
sorry for so many questions.
i just wanna get the same stuff you got for the same price!!
thanks!
JOYCE
No problem, just confused as you stated you just bought a Bodybugg….
But yes, I purchased over the phone with BodyMedia.
They sent a copy of the order form via email to confirm, ect. (mostly because I requested to write in my own address due to the fact that I live in a historic district that has a similar address and my mail sometimes goes there if the addy is not written “just so”) That is how I know it the part # and prices ect. from the order form itself. However, it did not differ in anyway from what I had been already quoted by the rep.
Hope this helps!
well, i did purchase a bodybugg, but havent yet received it and would consider returning it.
or i could just resell it on ebay or something.
but i would really prefer the smaller sensewear WMS.
thanks for the info!
You are most welcome!
And, “Good Luck” in your weight-loss endeavors!
I am very disappointed :(( Ijust got my body bugg 10 days ago and I checkd when the new one was going to be released by the end of this year but t now it is already out !!! Do you know if they would take it back so I can get the new one?
Thanks for all the updates!! I’ve been talking/emailing reps from both Apex (Body Bugg) and Body Media (Sensewear). I was confused on if the products were the same or different or what..here’s what Body Bugg rep had to say “It is confusing because Body Media is our development partner, yet they also sell the product with a different name and a different web interface directly to consumers”. Also, BB plans to release the smaller version late summer/early fall. However, you can get the smaller one already from Body Media. They quoted me the $459 price, but I was told the monthly subscription after that is $20/month…so the $138 per year sounds much better than that!! I am having a garage sale this weekend to see if I can get enough money to offset the price a little! I was worried the website wouldn’t be very good. I currently use www.myfooddiary.com and it is a WONDERFUL food database and calorie counter, so I don’t want to be disappointed in the software! I’m glad to hear you like it, Sussurro!
sally,
that $20/month ($5/week) was the same price i was quoted.
im wondering if they just recently increased their subscription prices.
im gonna be really bummed if they did.
sussurro,
thanks for the good luck. you, too!
