bodybugg on The Biggest Loser

My guilty pleasure: I love The Biggest Loser.  We saw season 3 last year and I think it’s the first show in history that Daniel, Leanna, and I all enjoyed equally.  Leanna and I like it because of the triumphing-over-adversity aspect, and Daniel likes that the trainers push the contestants and they really have to work.  We all were amazed at the results of that work.

You know how when you consider buying a new vehicle, you start seeing them everywhere?  Something similar happened when I started wearing the bodybugg.  Not that I saw them everywhere (because they just aren’t that prevalent yet), but Daniel kept hearing me hiss, “Look, she’s wearing a bodybugg!”

Imagine my surprise when I tuned into The Biggest Loser last week and spotted the tell-tale gray armbands.  “Look, bodybuggs!” I cried.  We immediately speculated that the bodybugg was going to be featured (The Biggest Loser is really over-the-top with product placement), but as the show went on, no mention.

Sadly, it wasn’t until today that I made the connection that Apex is affiliated with both bodybugg and 24 Hour Fitness, which is heavily promoted on the show.  Then this evening as I was logging my food, I saw I had a new email from Apex titled “bodybugg reaches 100k ‘big losers’”.  Sure enough, tonight there were a lot more bodybuggs visible, and as I’ve been writing, a little blurb with trainer Kim where she looked at one of the contestant’s data (though it looked like she was looking on a Mac!).

I’ll be interested to see over the course of show how much they feature the data.  I might even pick up some tips for my own bodybugg use, if they take it past the typical “this is neat, go buy it” schpiel.

I heard straight from bodybugg(tm) Technical Support that it is possible to use a program like Boot Camp (free) or Parallels and a compatible Windows version installed to use Mac hardware to use the bodybugg program.

That’s a good point. I don’t have Parallels installed at the moment, though I did find their trial handy, and in any case I don’t have an extra Windows license lying around at the moment, but that is a way around the limitation.

For now it’s easier for me to just use my laptop, but thanks for reminding Mac-only readers of the option.

The geek in me wants a bodybugg. However, aside from the steep price and no MAC OS support there is as additional concern that keeps me from plopping down the cash. Many years ago I used a product called Sportbrain. It was pedometer that you plugged in to a phone line daily. Your data was uploaded and could be viewed on the Sportbrain site. For someone who loves looking at the numbers it was a great tool and it had a growing community of users. However the company went under without notice. All user data was just gone and we all had worthless plastic junk. Sportbrain is back in business but do you have access to your data? Same concern with bodybugg. I have had better luck with the CalorieKing nutrition and calorie counter. I have been using it well over a year and there’s no monthly fees. It has a deep Database that seems to be updated regularly and runs on my Macs. Now if I could plug in the BodyBugg into this software..i’m in. Great site! I love the design :)

Wow, Lori, that’s an awesome deal. I just got bought mine last night for $199 and the digital display for $99 plus $8 shipping. At $306, it was steep still but I am hoping (need) to see what I am doing wrong. Eating too much and not burning enough calories! I would love to finally have control and be accountable for everything I eat because it will be right in front of me, rather than guess all the time. That obviously has not worked! Extreme diets, expensive pills, books, expensive foods i don’t even like, expensive gym membership without results… you know $306 is a bargain if it will give me knowledge, encouragement and control over my weight and health. I will keep you all posted on my progress. I am 5′3 female, 146lbs and I need to lose 20lbs, i have been trying to lose it for 10 years!!!! I would love to hear from you whether or not you have a BB. How much you have lost, how much it cost, if you are still using it etc. Thanks!!!

The Bodybugg intrigues my wife and me. However, after looking into the product further we share some of Danny’s concerns. Examples might be:

1. Bodybugg offers no support for the Mac OS, including our two, Mac G4 laptops. Beyond the Bodybugg, we don’t foresee the need of an Intel Mac in the near future.

2. Lack of support for an ever-growing segment of the computer community (Macintosh) suggests the Bodybugg Company is rather short sighted, and not as forward thinking as it wants us to believe. Could it be the company is working on an extremely limited budget and an uncertain future? Is it wise to invest in a product that offers promise but an uncertain future?

3. Expecting Mac customers to purchase a rather expensive Bodybugg product and program, upgrade their computers to an Intel Mac, and then require them to purchase VMFusion or Parallels, and a copy of Windows seems ludicrous!

4. Customer support in Panama? Our experiences with companies that outsource customer support leave much room for improvement. Example: Having had to deal with Adobe Systems outsourced customer service has, in the recent past been an unpleasant experience.

5. The grey on white design of the Bodybugg website looks professional, contemporary and trendy, but obviously overlooks easy readability, especially for most people over 45 years of age.

Considering all the above, along with the financial situation in this country right now we think we’ll wait and see. If the company is still around in a year or two, maybe we’ll reconsider. Until then, thanks but no thanks.

I’ve seen a posting or two that bodybugg will be coming out with a Mac compliant version sometime this month. That will eliminate a huge hurdle toward me buying. I’ve been unwilling to put down the extra cash for a Windows license.

My trainer showed me his parallel Windows on Mac and it runs Bodybugg software. I LOVE my Bodybugg. I cannot imagine not having it. I paid $300 for mine and it is worth many times that much for me. Nothing compared to all of the diets I’ve been on. I eat good, nutritious foods, but foods I like. I had a huge shock. I thought I couldn’t lose because of my metabolism. I couldn’t lose because I ate more than a burned. But there’s no way to know to the exact calories without my BB. I download from my bugg to the computer many times daily, as I also log my food. I know exactly how much more I have to move or how much less I have to eat to have a deficit. 550 calorie daily deficit for 1 pound weight loss per week. I try to get 1000 cal. deficit, because I want (and am) losing -2 pounds a week. I have lost 25 pounds since July. Not always a 2 pound loss, but I always knew why. I was either sick, or too lazy to move more than I did. I have had excellent tech support. I actually love mine so much, I had to buy my 2nd one. I did a really dumb thing,. I ran out one afternoon to swim my laps and forgot to take the bugg off. You canNOT swim or shower with it on. I have had a bugg for 2 years. During that time I had a serious illness, couldn’t work out and part of the time didn’t even try to use my bugg. But as soon as I was well enough, I was back in business with it again. Can’t believe all of those years, never really knowing what I was burning. BodyBugg is SO worth the money!!!

Well I’m in the UK and have been umming and arghhing about buying one of these Bodybuggs for months and months. Only found it because I saw a Biggest Looser episode where the trainer mentioned looking at the site and could see when she wasn’t in the house the person wasn’t doing anything… so I had to go and search and eventually found that they wear BodyBuggs.

I’ve been on many bloggs reading the info and concerned about the money it costs.

I’ve tried every diet out there and continue to struggle with making permenant lifestyle changes.

Three years ago I suffered (and am still off work) with stress, anxiety and depression and over the last three years have put on 5 stone.. in the last six months I’ve managed to get myself outside and due to a charity called MIND have started yoga which is helping enormously. I know what goes in my mouth and my daily walks are insufficient to loose weight. My partner Gary and I have short walks which are about 3-4 miles which we do evenings when he comes home from work and a long walk 6-7 miles which we do weekends. Our dog loves the walk and the mile variance on each walk is due to whether its rained or whether paths are passable. I can say I’m exhausted because I don’t do enough, however, I suffer too much anxiety to attempt to attend a gym or ‘mix’ with people in regular classes so my weight loss has been sparodic and dependent on how I’m feeling I’m making good choices or bad. Yo-yo’d for months between 15st 7lbs and 14st 14lbs and now between 14st 7lbs and 14st 10lbs. I’m 80% there but need an extra push and I think this is where I will find this product invaluable.

Money for me is tighter than tight but I keep saying to myself that at my current sparodic weight loss I’ll be years down the line and to be honest I’m one of those people that if I loose focus or if I get depressed I go off the rails and eat. I’m also at the point where there is nothing left to cut out, don’t have sugar, small portions of white meat, tofu or beans. No added salt, no processed food. I don’t drink tea or coffee. Have wholemeal, low GI all the time, plenty of fruit and veg and don’t loose weight. I know I’m too sedentry during the day.

When you are overweight but healthy you can focus, but when you are ill like I am the world is a scary place. Slowly I am integrating and I can be rational and know the right things to do, the right things to eat, the exercise I used to do. I was a physically fit person, I used to play league tennis, squash, badminton, went to the gym 5 day’s a week, worked out hard, went to body combat and body pump classes and kick fit so as a seasoned dieter and keep fit addict you’d think I’d have the incentive without the need for additional support. But thats where my common sense fails me, I need help for everything these day’s and its frightening.

I always log my food, cept when I’ve blown it, but I’ve been logging food for years and I know it works. You know you can adjust your last meal or snack by counting the calories of what you have eaten during the day. I know its invaluable in choosing wisely and I know it works so the bodybuggs system is just going to replace my paper version. I look up the calories of new things online so its been easy. The difficulty is usually when I cook a meal and have to divide up the portions and estimate that I think I’ve eaten a quarter of what I’ve made and hope it contains an equal amount of the ingredients e.g. quorn or prawn stir fry.

Another big failing of mine is not drinking enough. If I have to see the Dr, Psyciatrist, Psycologist, therapy, councelling, go to the grocers the food and drink go out the window so it can often happen if I go out for one appointment and the grocers visit I’ll be out for 4 hours and not eat or drink anything in that time. Thats to do with planning and keeping a bottle of water on me at all times. I just don’t have the same instincts I had before, I don’t feel thirsty, I get fixated on the tasks to hand and managing my stress and anxiety in doing the tasks. Simple things like is there a car parking space, does the parking meter work this week, am I late, early, Will I see anyone I know, will anyone talk to me, will I break down in public and cry. I get stressed and have anxiety just going to the grocers store, is it busy, can I keep to the budget, don’t forget anything on the list.

I know I’m rambling but I think the bodybugg will give me a different focus and potentially enable me on so many different levels to improve, to get out there and start living again, to try and get to the gym whilst I still have a few months membership left. To prompt me to maybe walk up the garden, on a nice day do some gardening. Walk up the stairs a couple of times. I know when I connect a pedometer and haven’t reached my 10,000 steps how I try to be more active to get closer to it during the week. I think the bodybugg will help me set new goals, and keep me on track when life gets too much for me.

I’m worried that if I don’t get the bodybugg I’ll still be this weight in 6 months, still won’t be able to get into any clothes and still won’t be able to afford new work clothes. My finances are worse than bad and the purchase will have to go on a credit card but if I don’t loose the weight I’ll have to spend this and more on bigger clothes for when I go back to work which is expected to be December/January time.

I’ve been weighing this up in my mind the Apex site offeres the whole package plus six months membership so no additional payments for six months.

Even if I only loose a stone between now and Christmas I’ll be overweight instead of obese. I’ll have a BMI of 29.9 instead of 32.7. I’ll be fitter more focused, hopefully have a routine, have met people, be mixing with people, be challenging myself. At 13st 7/8lbs I still won’t be able to get into my work clothes, I’d need to be 11st to 11st 7lbs which would be a loss of 3 st (42lbs). End of December is approximately 22 weeks away. I’d have to loose 1.9lbs a week to achieve my goal.

I think that by having this device it would encourage me to go to the gym, I know once in the gym I can workout really well as I have muscle memory and a good gym ethic. I put in 99% effort at whatever sport I do (or I used to anyway, I hope in this I haven’t changed) perhaps with this I’d also be willing to talk to a trainer at the gym and get a tailored workout that pushes me or Gary could tailor a workout.

The only negative in purchasing this Bodybugg is Money which I don’t have but loosing weight or not I’ll still have to buy clothing.. however, if buying this and achieving consistent weight loss, dependent on my capabilities would result in my confidence and self worth increasing and at this point in my life this would be well worth the money.

So I’m going to bite the bullet and purchase one, I’m going to commit to getting one today. I especially need one now because the MIND Charity Yoga class has ceased until September and its unknown if funding will be found. If I can get fitter and get to the gym where there are people I might just get confident enough to join a regular class.

I also know that its causing me a huge amount of stress knowing I will return to work now 4st 7lbs (currently) heavier than when I left that I just don’t want to face people looking at me as a failure in mind as well as body. I already feel a failure I don’t need to see it in others faces as well.

My blogg is really a pledge to myself to buy a Bodybugg, set an achievable goal of going to the gym and eating healthily 90% of the time, to hopefully be a size 14/16 by the time I return to work and continue to get down to my pre-illness weight of 9st or 8st 7lbs to have a BMI of 25 or under. That this isn’t a diet its a way of living and get back to being a healthy, fit and happy human being again.

I wish anyone who is dieting and getting fit all the success they deserve. I know we can all do it and this this product is just an additional aid which we will need short or long term in our struggle with leading a normal healthy lifestyle where food is no longer the focus. I do believe that the focus of this tool for me will be the exercise and hopefully this is where the biggest change at this point in my life will be, back to getting back into my sports and loving every minute of it as I used to.

Being ill has actually been a very positive thing for me, by breaking down completely and not being able to do anything has actually saved my life in the long term. I was headed for a heart attack, stroke. My boyfriend wasn’t going to put up with me working long hours. In the three years I’ve been ill I was also unwell prior to my diagnosis and I made people’s lives around me hell. I was horrid to myself and others all for wanting and needing others approval for the work I was doing. I never asked for help and now because of my illness I’ve been forced to change, forced to ask for help because I’ve not been able to help myself. I am a changed woman and am looking, today, at the challenges ahead of leading a healthy, normal, well balanced life in all aspects, as something I need to achieve. I need to be able to set goals and targets that are achievable so that when I return to work I don’t spend all my time working and nothing for my home life.

I know this product is a tool so basically what I put into this is what I’ll achieve. My man Gary is taking me on holiday in 6 weeks so I hope that the BodyBugg arrives before our holiday, which will be a walking/trekking holiday – if I can loose some weight and start hill climbing in the gym I know it will help when we are in the USA. I absolutely hate holding Gary back and I love the walks in Zion park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Joshua, Big Bend and I know that on previous holidays we walk 10-15 miles a day so the fitter I can be the better so as to enjoy the wonders of the parks. Hopefully in the motels we stay at I can logon to the internet and log my food which again will assist in making wise choices at breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst still enjoying our holiday.
